Minerals can leach onto adjacent windows from unsealed precast or poorly applied caulking. These mineral deposits stain the glass, preventing occupants from seeing outside. Glass restoration can remove the mineral stains and restore the window to its original condition.
Improper window cleaning methods use high mineral content tap water and dishwashing liquid, which leaves hard water stains and soap scum on building glass. Windows close to sprinkler systems can also develop these stains over time. Restoring and maintaining the glass with Presto products and techniques will remove stains and prevent them from developing in the future.
Glass scratches can be caused by improper and abrasive glass restoration products, as well as the scrapers used during construction cleanup or paint and caulking removal efforts. This etching in the glass creates a cloudy appearance, making the windows appear dirty from both the interior and exterior of the building. Presto can repair fine or deep scratches with techniques that leave a like-new appearance.
Extreme exposure to damaging elements can actually corrode the glass. This damage must be repaired by resurfacing the window, which removes the corrosion along with a very thin layer of glass to level the surface and prevent any optical distortion.
Once dried onto the glass, these materials are difficult to remove. Common industry practice is to remove the concrete with a stainless steel scraper blade and dishwashing liquid, leaving scratches on the glass surface. Presto’s Glass-Crete product is a proprietary formulation containing phosphoric acid and acid-compatible polymers that break down the calcium in the concrete while lubricating the glass surface to provide easy removal.
Glass is a highly polished surface and can easily be damaged by harsh, abrasive products. The industry standard techniques involve the use of acids that can leave burns in the glass and surrounding architectural materials, creating a hazed look.
Presto’s products and techniques will not scratch or burn the glass. Instead, they leave a highly reflective and clear finish after completely removing the stains and repairing any corrosion.
Before moving forward with the full restoration, it is important to test select products and techniques. Glass surfaces are delicate, and depending on the type of stain, some may require a different solution to achieve the desired result. Window test areas should be examined in direct sunlight and from a variety of angles to ensure that the glass is not burned or scratched.
After the building windows have been restored, we highly recommend applying a silicone protective treatment to prevent future damage and staining. Protecting the glass after restoration can leave maintained windows looking brand new decades.
Glass sealers can also be applied to new construction buildings or replacement glass to protect them from ever needing restoration.
Presto’s protective treatments provide such a smooth surface that any debris or dirt can easily be cleaned during routine maintenance.
Presto provides a 5-, 10- or 20-year product warranty depending on the silicone coating selected. And we always make sure our clients are armed with the proper maintenance knowledge to extend the life of these glass protection treatments. Presto’s detailed recommendations will show how to correctly clean the windows without damaging the protective sealer. Plus, if the glass is properly maintained, an extensive restoration should not be needed again.
